:?: :?: :?: :?: [font=Arial Black] [/font]Perhaps those who are uncomfortable or having problems getting used to the technical aspects of the site can ask questions here?
Tomorrow I'll ask some.

Technical answer men

Postby skeptical bystander on Fri May 02, 2008 9:49 am

I nominate Michael and Brian to serve as co-handlers of this thread, since both seem to have experience on this type of board.

However, anyone with an answer to any technical question is free to provide assistance.

Any objections?

Personally, I'm finding it easier with each passing day.

Okay, first question...I just tried to get the olive color to write a reply of thanks to Kermit. Thought I did what seemed logical in preview, but as re-previewing it, the new preview does not show how the html has digested the symbols, I don't really know if it works. Obviously it didn't. Not really so important, but rather than waste time and space, any suggestions?[font=Trebuchet] [/font]

Font colors

Postby Stacey on Fri May 02, 2008 12:21 pm

Hi May! I had the same problem yesterday, had a cute font color and style all ready to go (green in fact), but alas, it appeared as the standard. I think maybe it is the settings on our own PC's? I was able to do it once before though...... Hmmm. :?

PM's

[font=Century Gothic]Does anyone know the difference in "Sentbox" vs "Outbox" when PM'ing?

Thanks,

Before you apply the colour font - make sure to highlight the text first, and then change the font colour in the dropdown menu.

I found that if it doesn't accept the font colour - it's because the '[colour=xx] and [/colour] are both at the end of the paragraph, instead of being at the beginning and the end. It took me a few frowns and head-scratching before I figured out why the colour didn't apply.

So highlight the text first - apply the colour font of your choice - and then double check the [colour=xx] is at the beginning of the text, and the [/colour] is at the end of the text.

It might be that the outbox is for messages that haven't been sent yet (like Outlook Express/Windows Mail etc) and the sent box is for messages that have actually been sent.

Thanks Soozie! COOL!

[font=Century Gothic]At least I think it is......can't tell if it worked until I submit, I guess? [/font]

Whether it works or not, thanks for the info, and I will get it right yet!

Thanks again Soozie! The thing is a couple have sent and a couple are in "Outbox." I'm not using Outlook. Could it be what the receiver is using, or is that a dumb question? (Be honest, I can take it! lol)

[size=12][font=Times New Roman]Thanks Soozie and Stacey, I have just made a mess of some other threads trying and goofing. But, I now realized some of the same things. One important thing to remember is that when one picks 'Quick Reply' I don't think the choices are there. It's necessary to go to 'Post a reply' to have the choices from the get-go.

One more questions.
I can't get things OUT of my outbox. I posted a PM to someone and there it sits, and has not left in hours. Anyone know what
's up wit
h this?

Thanks all,
M[/font][/size]

[font=Comic Sans MS]P.S. I just did all that was suggested, highlighting all the text, and voila, mistakes, as it randomly inserts the html in[/font] odd places. Oh me.

[font=Georgia]Yes, that's the problem, The html inserts randomly sometimes, and that's why changes don't take effect. It's worth previewing before you post just to make sure the effects are there. I noticed that if I highlighted everything (including any html codes for 'bold' etc), then the html would drop in at the end instead of at the beginning and the end.

I don't know why you and Stacey are having problems with your outbox. I haven't had any issues with that yet. Not being able to delete them sounds a bit buggy.[/font]

Hi again Soozie! I'm so impressed! You are the "TEKKY!"

If May is experiencing the same as me, I don't think she was saying that she couldn't delete them, but that they were not "sending." Instead, they are just sitting there in her outbox, as one of mine is. With mine, after I posted it, it send "Sent" but is not showing in "Sentbox." It is however showing in my "Outbox." I did sen d two though that are showing in my "Sentbox" and have been received. I may be confusing you even more???? I hope not. :?

[font=Trebuchet]Stacey: I just checked my 'outbox' out of curiosity, and I can see a PM I sent to Beep sitting in there.

The first one I sent shows in the 'sent' folder, and the second one is only showing in the 'outbox' folder.

Beep: if you're here, did you get my second PM yesterday?

Stacey: I wonder if they stay in the outbox until the other person retrieves the message, and it then becomes 'sent'?

By the way, the html has multiple-personality disorder

out/sent box and etc.

Postby skeptical bystander on Fri May 02, 2008 4:23 pm

About the outbox/sent box. I have discovered that what appears to be in the outbox (and not sent) actually has been sent, but sits in the outbox for awhile anyway. Just ignore it!
Also, about the [font=Century Gothic]fonts [/font]and colors and wingdings and fancy things. If you use quick reply, you do have to go into preview to gain access to those options.
Ah, the wonders of technology! And actually, it is pretty magical that we are so far flung and yet communicating with one another. There is always a learning curve, and we are on it! :D

Well...I'd be happy to help out anywhere I can. If anyone has any problems, let me know.

In the meantime...a good trick is to develop a style of post that matches you...then learn the BBcode for it...it's easier then you think. Once you have learned that....you can manually type that in with your post straight into the 'Quick Post' slot. I always code mine manually and surprisingly, it is faster to do it that way then to format via the main post panel (less moving through clicks, waiting for pages to load etc,). In the meantime, here's a good link to add to your forum favourites...it's a BBcode guide and lists the mainly used types of BBcode in forum posts:

New 'Utility Topic' created - THE RANGE

Postby Michael on Mon May 05, 2008 12:02 pm

[font=Comic Sans MS][align=center]THE RANGE[/align]

I've just created a new utility topic called 'The Range'... a place where board members may make random posts in order to learn/experiment with the various post formatting tools, or simply to test the format of a post before assigning it to its intended thread. Click on the link to go straight to The Range explanatory announcement:[/font]

You couldn't make it up.

Don't mind me, just wasn't sure whether to go for indigo or violet. Cyan sounds nice too, a little risque maybe?

This is the front page of Italy's 'best' newspaper. They lead with the four female ministers in the new government, four out of 21 I think. Under the lovely photo it says, "Ceremony at the Quirinale, the women all in trousers, Prestigiacomo goes for a daring purple, Carfagna in 'tailleur, Ronchi makes the sign of the cross.(coloured outfit d)

Man, that last post was supposed to be in colour. Not to worry. Here's the daring purple anyway, women's emancipation, Italian style.

Damian, the html insertion is a bit hit and miss. If the chosen colour didn't come out, it's because the html entered both codes at the end of the text instead of at the beginning and the end. If you preview it, and the colour's not there - check if the html code is at the beginning and end of the selected text

[font=Comic Sans MS]For the purpose of keeping the board simple and tidy I am now locking this thread.

I shall be creating a replacement technical help topic, which shall be made a sticky in the near future. It shall also contain links to all relevant points made in this topic. Please keep an eye out for its appearance.

If you feel it essential this topic be unlocked, please contact a Moderator via PM.
